Do I Need a Patient Advocate?

Do I Need a Patient Advocate?

Most people have the capability to speak up, research information, ask questions, and access resources. The truth is that those capabilities are not enough to assist an individual who experiences physical or cognitive decline. So many times we hear seniors return from a doctor’s visit and tell their loved ones “the doctor said that everything is fine”, miss their medical appointments, don’t comply with their medications, experience depression that is often misperceived as part of aging, misinformed of their care options, lack care due to inability to pay, and the list goes on and on.

Patient advocacy offers a strategic and comprehensive planning of care. It addresses both short- and long-term needs. A patient advocate is skilled, educated, and experienced in advocacy and care coordination. An advocate knows to ask the right questions during a medical appointment and take notes as well as ensure a proper follow up on doctor’s recommendations and referrals. Patient advocates are skilled and knowledgeable in identifying community resources base on income and needs. Patient advocacy allows you to have a direct access to an expert that is solely dedicated to serving your needs and wishes.

Quality of life during older adulthood depends on the quality of care that is provided as well as open access to needed care such as medical specialists, home healthcare, medical supply, and socialization. The ability to maximize one’s independence and quality of life requires multi-step and multi-layered network of support and resources. It requires strategic planning and comprehensive oversight of care.

Don’t compromise for less when you can have more and better. Advocacy and Care Management is vital when help is needed. Not sure if you need an advocate? Schedule a FREE 30 mins phone consultation with one of our advocates.
